Physics needed?

Here are some problems that require the solver to use a little math and apply a bit of physics.

1) The helium balloon

Imagine a large moving van. The cargo area is empty except for a helium filled balloon on a string. The string is tied to the middle of the floor and is floating at about head height. The doors to the cargo area are closed. Imagine that the driver gets in the cab and accelerates as much as the trucks engine can do. If you were able to look into the cargo area and see the balloon you could answer the question.

Which way does the balloon lean? Forward towards the front of the truck, backward or stays vertical?

2) Two "identical" balls

Coming soon....

Devise an experiment to determine which is silver and which is gold.

3) The candle

Coming soon....

Does it burn longer than 60 seconds, exactly 60 seconds, or less than 60 seconds?

4) The magnet

You are floating in a space suit in outer space. In each hand you have a rod made of iron. Each is 6 inches long and has a cross section about 1/2 inch in diameter. One is a magnet and the other is not.

How can you determine which one is the magnet?

5) The coin

Coming soon....

Will the coin fall through the hole, fit exactly, or not be able to be placed in the hole?

6) The bolts floating in a cup

Coming soon....

Will ?

7) The elevator in free fall

You are in a box (think elevator size) that seems to your senses to be in free fall.

How can you determine if you are: a) in a big box in outer space or b) in a box acting like an elevator oscillating in a shaft drilled throuhgh the center of the earth?
